What is the nature of your work?
I am interested in it as Bi+ is a large queer minority but we only have little data about this group, especially in Germany. That’s why we conducted our own piece of research on the Berlin Bi+ community.
In a 2022 survey about the Bi+ community in Berlin, we asked in-depth questions about identity, labels, discrimination and also needs of the Bi+ community in Berlin.
We learned that the Bi+ community in Berlin ist very diverse and uses various labels for themselves. We found out that nearly 30% claim that their sexual desire towards different gender is fluent rather than feeling the same attraction to different genders constantly.
3 things you wish everyone knew about bisexuality?
It is a way of loving and desiring, and can also can be an identity.
Being Bi+ is much more common than most people think.
Being bi+ does not mean that there is any need to commit to be equally attracted to two (binary) genders.
What is the most interesting thing you have learned about bisexuality+ from your research?
We have seen from our survey that inclusion and intersectionality is very important. In Germany, we have a lot of work to do regarding BIPoC-Inclusion, particularly when it comes to the representation of the diverse Bi+ folks and identities.
Are you bi?
Yes, I do.
Tell us more.
When did I know I was Bi? It’s not easy to answer, I guess I know longer than I thought. Most of my family knows, although not all of them, and yes my colleagues know. I came out in and around my 30’s and what I came out because I met and fell in love with someone of a different gender than I used to date before.
